Window Hardware Repairs, Catches and Sliding Movement

Separate a window that will not slide, a torn insect screen and water entering around the opening. For rain-related water entry, note the wind direction, the first wet edge and whether it happens only in heavy rain. Hinged Doors, Sliding Panels and Ordinary Insect Screens
You can start with the difficulty you have noticed and the type of door or screen, if known; assessment identifies the relevant fitting. A hinged door that catches, a wardrobe panel with worn moving parts and a sliding insect screen require different checks. For a door that rubs or fails to latch, note the contact point and any recent flooring changes. Assessment covers accessible hinges, fixings, clearances and latch contact before a repair is agreed. Window enquiries should identify the opening type and affected catch or handle.
For an operating fault, describe where movement stops and whether a hinge, catch, roller or handle is affected. Water entry can be reported alongside the movement issue; drainage openings can remain clear and glazing fitted while each concern is assessed. Flyscreen mesh and frame repairs
A tear in the mesh does not necessarily mean the entire screen needs replacing. The frame, corners, retaining spline and fit in the opening also matter. We check the affected screen and explain whether remeshing or further frame work is appropriate.
Include whether the screen is fitted to a window or door. Insect mesh and security screens serve different purposes; describe the product before choosing material or hardware.
Shower Screen Repairs, Replacement and Sealing

Tell us the enclosure type, where the door catches or water escapes, any visible product markings and access around the shower. A shower door that drags or sits unevenly needs its own fittings and clearances assessed. An insect screen uses a different system, so identify the enclosure before parts are proposed. Window hardware, frame condition and repair choices
A window that is hard to open can have worn moving parts, damaged timber or a problem at a fixing point. Tell us the opening type and whether the frame, handle or track is affected. The Burnside sliding-window record shows one hardware repair; a deteriorated timber frame needs its own assessment.
Timber Window Movement, Coatings and Frame Condition
For a sticking timber window, identify the sash or casement type, contact point and visible paint build-up or soft timber. A painted-shut sash has a different mechanism from the Burnside sliding-window hardware example. Leave old coatings, cords and counterweights undisturbed and arrange suitable window assessment rather than forcing the opening.
Our company team also undertakes local repairs or replacement of decayed timber windows and frames. Tell us where the timber is soft, about repeated wetting, earlier repairs and any heritage restrictions. The depth of decay, joints and sound supporting timber determine whether local repair or replacement is suitable; a surface patch is not evidence of restored structural strength. Draughts, Ventilation and Water Entry
A gap under an external door can involve operating clearance, a worn seal or the threshold. Report where cold air enters and any visible seal wear. Suitable sealing must preserve door operation and required ventilation; a draught is not automatically a reason to replace the door.
A whistling window does not identify the air path by itself. Record the wind conditions, closing movement and visible frame damage without probing or blocking openings. Identify whether an opening provides ventilation or drainage before any sealing is selected. Unwanted air leakage differs from rainwater entry through joints, drainage or flashing: a draught seal is not a water-leak repair.
These observations help choose the appropriate assessment. Door or window seal replacement, draught-proofing and water-ingress remediation need separate scope confirmation.
Door and Window Repair Quotes: Hardware and Finishing
The number and type of openings, accessible hardware, compatible parts and condition of the frame affect the proposed work. Identify which items rub, fail to latch or need new mesh. Ask the quote to distinguish adjustment, parts replacement, glazing or specialist work and any finishing.
Send the fitting type, symptoms and any known model. Photos are optional: for a hinged door, existing views of the whole door, hinges, latch and damaged frame can help; for a moving window, show the visible operating hardware. Mention tenancy approval and access limits. Leave heavy panels, broken glass and old coatings undisturbed.

Should I describe the window or door type before requesting a repair?
Yes. Say whether it is hinged, sliding, a wardrobe panel or an ordinary insect screen, and describe where it catches or fails to close. The mechanism determines the assessment and likely parts, so “sticking door” alone may not identify the work required.
Should I buy replacement rollers before the assessment?
Wait until the roller housing, dimensions, fixing points, panel and track have been assessed. We confirm compatible parts and the agreed work in the written quote; ask which hardware work, frame repairs or finishing it includes. Glazing damage, fire-rated doors and security systems need separate confirmation of our company team’s accepted scope and any qualification requirements. Where licensed work is required, confirm the appropriately licensed person and their scope before approving it. Heavy panels can stay in place while the compatible part is identified, before a replacement is ordered.
Can torn mesh be repaired without replacing the frame?
Remeshing can be suitable when the frame and retaining parts are serviceable. MEL ONE checks the screen and explains any frame work needed before quoting.
Can I include a wardrobe door and a window in one request?
Yes. Describe each fitting separately, including where it catches or fails to operate. We assess the individual mechanisms and agree the work for each item.
Can a timber window be repaired rather than replaced?
Sometimes, but the timber condition, joints, operating hardware and extent of damage must be assessed. Share any known heritage restrictions. The proposed repair and any specialist work are confirmed before you approve changes.
