Define the wall damage and the finish you want before comparing quotes. A sound patch, a local paint touch-up and a wider painted wall are distinct outcomes; existing moisture or movement can change the order of work.
Wall Patching, Sanding, Priming and Paint Finishing
A hole may need backing and replacement board before joint compound, drying and sanding. Primer prepares the repaired surface for paint. These stages use different materials and may require separate visits.
A sound patch can still show through an older finish. For small wall patches and finishing, choose the intended endpoint in the quote: patch only, primer and paint touch-up, or a wider painted area. A perfect colour match should not be assumed.
Wall Holes, Recurring Cracks and Damp Patches
An isolated impact hole differs from a recurring crack or damp patch. Covering the surface does not resolve continuing movement or moisture. Record when the change appeared, previous repairs and any known leak history.
Leave unknown materials undisturbed. An existing photo with the wall intact is sufficient to begin; further assessment may be needed before sanding, opening-up or cosmetic work.

List adjoining skirting as its own item. A loose cupboard front belongs with cupboard hinge and drawer-runner repairs, because its supporting material and fixings differ from plasterboard.
A new furniture kit needs its model, instructions and missing-part list. These tasks may share an enquiry, but they are not stages of a wall patch.
Wall Repair Preparation Checklist
Give each affected area a simple room-and-position reference so the assessor can connect your notes to the correct location.
- Estimate the visible size and distance from nearby edges without disturbing the surface.
- Attach safe existing wide and closer views if useful, with private documents out of frame.
- Note room availability, belongings restricting access and who can agree the work.
Record whether the damage is a small hole, a cracked joint or a damp or moving area. Include the existing wall finish and whether the requested result includes sanding, primer and painting. Repairing a small hole and repainting a complete wall are different scopes; an unresolved moisture or movement problem needs consideration before cosmetic finishing.
Wall patching and interior repair questions
Why might a wall patch need more than one visit?
Backing, joint compound, primer and paint are separate stages, and products need suitable drying conditions before the next stage. The size and finish affect the sequence. Confirm the included stages and timing instead of assuming a patch and final paint can always be completed together.
Does patching a hole include sanding and repainting?
Only if those stages are included in the agreed scope. Ask which preparation and finish are quoted. Local paint or texture matching depends on the existing surface and is not assumed to be exact.
Should I sand or open the damaged wall before assessment?
No. Leave the area visible and unchanged. Unknown older materials, continuing cracks or moisture may need appropriate assessment before surface work is proposed.
